The global version of the Cygames-developed gacha RPG Umamusume: Pretty Derby has officially launched outside Japan. This mobile title combines horse racing simulation with anime-style character collection, featuring over 20 unique anthropomorphic horse-girls. Each character—called "uma musume"—possesses equine ears, a tail, and distinct racing stats that determine performance in competitive events. The game operates on a training-and-race cycle where player decisions directly impact character growth and race outcomes.

Core Gameplay and Training Mechanics

The primary loop in Umamusume: Pretty Derby revolves around managing a training academy schedule for your selected uma musume. Players choose daily activities—such as speed drills, endurance runs, or skill practice—that affect six core stats: speed, stamina, power, guts, intelligence, and skill points. Each training session consumes in-game stamina, and the character's condition (from "fine" to "excellent") influences stat gains. A unique "golden aura" mechanic triggers critical success states, temporarily doubling stat increases for specific training actions.

The race system supports up to 18 simultaneous competitors on screen. Races are divided into three phases: start dash, mid-race positioning, and final sprint. Players can activate special skills—unlocked through training—during each phase using a skill point bar that refills during the race. The game includes a live commentary system that narrates race progress in real time, along with dynamic camera angles that follow the leading pack.

Character Roster and Gacha System

Cygames delivers high-fidelity 3D character models with over 50 unique facial expressions per character, combined with 2D animated cutscenes for story progression. The game runs on the Unity engine with adaptive resolution scaling for Android devices. Race scenes feature particle effects for track surfaces (dirt vs. turf), weather conditions (sunny, rainy, snow), and time-of-day lighting changes. The UI includes customizable control layouts for skill activation timing and automated race mode for lower-stakes events.

Monetization and Progression Systems

The game offers a free-to-play model with optional subscriptions: the "Monthly Pass" provides daily carrot bonuses and stamina recovery items, while the "Premium Pass" unlocks exclusive training items and character-specific missions.
