About game FINAL FANTASY GRANDMASTERS

The Return of Vana'diel: A Tactical RPG Revival on Mobile

It begins not with a pre-rendered cinematic, but with a character creator that feels distinctly MMO-like. You are not handed a pre-written hero; you are given a list of races—including the iconic Humes, Elvaan, and Lalafell-like Tarutaru—and asked to build your own Grandmaster from scratch. This is the core proposition of FINAL FANTASY GRANDMASTERS, a mobile title from SQUARE ENIX that deliberately mimics the structure of Final Fantasy XI rather than the single-player entries. The campaign then unfolds as a series of missions that revisit the major story arcs of that classic MMO, from the Shadow Lord crisis to the rise of the Beastmen confederacies. The narrative is not an original epic, but a curated "greatest hits" tour of Vana'diel’s most memorable moments, delivered through text-based dialogue and static character portraits.

The combat system is a deliberate throwback to the turn-based era, specifically the Active Time Battle (ATB) system refined on the PlayStation and Nintendo DS. When a battle begins, your party and the enemies line up on opposite sides of the screen. A gauge fills for each unit, and when it reaches 100%, you select an action from a vertical menu: Attack, Magic, Special Ability, or Item. There is no real-time movement or action-RPG dodging. The tactical depth comes from class composition and timing. You can queue a Cure spell on a white mage while the black mage waits for his gauge to finish charging to cast Firaga. This is the same rhythm that defined Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI.

One of the most notable mechanical distinctions from the mainline Final Fantasy games is the job system. You begin with a single custom character, but as you progress, you unlock the ability to recruit NPCs from the Final Fantasy XI roster. These are not random summons; they are fixed, named characters such as Shantotto, Prishe, and Zeid. Each recruit comes with a predefined job—Paladin, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage, Thief, etc.—and a set of abilities tied to that role. You can build a party of up to five characters, mixing your own custom Grandmaster with four AI-controlled allies. The AI behavior is basic: each character will automatically use their most appropriate ability based on the situation (e.g., white mages heal allies below 50% HP, black mages cast elemental spells against weaknesses). You can override this with manual commands at any point, but the default automation makes grinding through low-stakes encounters faster.

The visual presentation is deliberately low-fidelity, mimicking the polygonal style of the Final Fantasy DS remakes (Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV). Characters are rendered in a chibi-like 3D style with blocky limbs and oversized heads. The environments are pre-rendered backgrounds with a static camera angle, much like the Final Fantasy VII overworld screens. This is not a graphical powerhouse, but it is a faithful recreation of the aesthetic that defined the franchise on handheld consoles. The UI is also a direct translation of the DS-era menus: a semi-transparent window at the bottom of the screen displays the party’s HP/MP bars, and the command menu pops up when a character’s turn arrives. It feels intentionally retro, not accidentally dated.

Key gameplay features include:

  • Custom character creation with four distinct races and a branching job system that allows you to specialize your Grandmaster as a Warrior, Monk, or White Mage.
  • Turn-based ATB combat with manual command input, mirroring the mechanics of Final Fantasy IV through Final Fantasy IX.
  • Recruitment of iconic Final Fantasy XI characters, each locked to a specific job class with unique abilities and equipment.
  • Auto-battle functionality for repetitive encounters, controlled by a simple priority-based AI that you can configure.
  • A mission-based campaign structure that retells the main story arcs of Final Fantasy XI across multiple chapters and side quests.
