About app Intra
Your DNS Traffic Is Exposed – Here’s How to Encrypt It
Every time your device loads a website, it sends a DNS request to look up the domain name. These requests are often sent in plain text, making them vulnerable to interception, manipulation, or redirection by your internet service provider, network administrators, or malicious actors. Intra, developed by Jigsaw Operations LLC, addresses this vulnerability by creating a secure, encrypted tunnel for all DNS queries. Instead of relying on your network’s default DNS resolver, Intra redirects each request through a DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) connection. This ensures that the domain names you visit remain private and cannot be tampered with en route.
The app currently supports two major DNS-over-HTTPS providers: Cloudflare and Google DNS. This limited initial selection is deliberate—both services are widely trusted for their security track record and low-latency infrastructure. Jigsaw has indicated that additional DNS providers will be added in future updates, expanding user choice without compromising performance. Once activated, Intra runs silently in the background, intercepting every DNS request from your browser and other apps, then encrypting it before it leaves your device. The result is a significant reduction in the risk of being redirected to a fake website, having your browser blocked by a rogue DNS filter, or having your browsing activity logged by third parties.
Core Functionality & Mechanics
The primary mechanism of Intra is straightforward: it acts as a local DNS proxy that converts standard UDP-based DNS queries into encrypted HTTPS requests. This process is transparent to the user—there are no complex settings to configure. The app’s interface is minimal, consisting of a single toggle switch and a provider selection menu. When enabled, Intra automatically routes all DNS traffic through the chosen DoH server. The encryption prevents any intermediary (including your ISP, public Wi-Fi operators, or network-level malware) from seeing which domains you are querying. It also prevents DNS spoofing attacks, where a malicious actor intercepts a DNS request and sends back a fake IP address to redirect you to a phishing site.
Intra’s performance impact is negligible for most users. DNS-over-HTTPS introduces a slight overhead due to the TLS handshake, but the latency is typically within 10–20 milliseconds compared to unencrypted DNS. The app runs as a local VPN service on Android, but it does not route general internet traffic—only DNS queries. This means your actual data throughput remains unaffected. The app also includes a “Turbo” mode, which is a marketing term for the standard DoH functionality; there is no separate acceleration feature. The benefit is purely security-oriented: encrypted DNS prevents DNS-level blocking, which is commonly used by governments or corporations to restrict access to certain sites.
